ASALH - Documenting History as it Unfolds
Recently, I was privileged to attend my second ASALH conference in Norfolk, Virginia.
Founded 111 years ago by Carter G. Woodson—widely known as the Father of Black History—ASALH’s mission is to protect, preserve, research, and disseminate Black life, history, and culture.
While many people believe history is solely about politicians, rulers, and governments, true history encompasses everything that pertains to life —including institutions, businesses, and even inanimate objects like land, trees, and buildings.
Two strong impressions stood out from my second ASALH experience. First, I was inspired by the remarkable number of senior citizens in their 70s, 80s, and 90s participating in every aspect of the conference. Second, every single person I met was actively engaged in teaching, documenting and recording history and life.
Next year, the 112th annual conference will be held in Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.
